There’s only one word to describe Simone Biles: golden! Rio 2016 crowned another champion on Aug. 11 after Simone slayed like no other, taking home the women’s individual all-around gold medal — with her teammate right behind her at silver!
Give it up for Simone Biles because she just entered her name in the history books. After three events in the women’s individual all-around finals on Aug. 11, Simone had more than a 1.5 point lead, so it was going to be hard to touch her. And closing out with the floor exercise (her best event) Simone clinched her much-anticipated gold medal. Everyone seemingly knew that the gold medal was hers, but she definitely earned it…by a full 2 POINTS!
Russia’s Aliya Mustafina gave Simone a run for her money, taking over the No. 1 spot after two rotations. But Simone quickly regained the top position after her balance beam routine, earning a 15.400 compared to Aliya’s 13.866, moving ahead by mile. Her teammate Aly Raisman was right up there too, even moving into the second place spot with an incredible floor score of 15.433. But that wasn’t enough to take over the near-perfect Simone, who nailed her floor routine and walked off knowing she was a gold medalist!

Many fans expected Simone, 19, or Aly, 22, to walk away with the gold, especially after the “Fab Five” transformed to the “Final Five” after winning the women’s team all-around event. Simone, Aly, Gabby Douglas, 20, Laurie Hernandez, 16, and Madison Kocian, 19, utterly slayed the competition, going from fab to flawless on the uneven bars, the floor routine, the vault and more. Though the Russian and Chinese teams tried, they couldn’t beat the Americans, and had to settle for silver and bronze.

Yet, there always has to be some drama at the Olympics. This is Rio 2016, after all! The Final Five found out that there’s such a thing as being too good during the qualifiers. Simone and Aly secured their place in the finals by getting the two highest scores.
Gabby, who won the individual all-around medal at London 2012, came in with the third best score. With America in the top three, many expected the red, white and blue to bring the triple-threat to the finals. Not so! Since the rules dictate that only two athletes per country can advance, Gabby was denied! That means 22 other athletes with scores lower than Gabby’s advanced. Scandal! Thankfully, she won’t leave Brazil empty handed and neither will Simone!
