The American women’s beach volleyball team, Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross, have been fierce competitors throughout the preliminaries, but second-seeded Brazilians Ágatha Bednarczuk and Bárbara Seixas came into the semifinals totally prepared to take them on. The Americans put in an amazing effort in the first set on Aug. 16, but Ágatha and Bárbara squeaked by at 22-20. And in the end, the Brazilians prevailed as the winners with a score of 21-18 in the second set, bringing them to 2-0 for the match.
But we know both teams pushed themselves to the limit and deserve congratulations! Now Agatha and Barbara will have a shot at gold against Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst, who upset top-seeded Brazilians Larissa França and Talita Antunes in their semifinal match on Aug. 16.

With America now out of the finals, Kerri and April are probably hurting. Though, Kerri currently has three gold medals from her time at the Athens, Beijing and London games to keep her company. The Rio Olympics marked the first time she and April have played together. Before now Kerri had only played with her long-time partner Misty May. Misty retired from the sport after the 2012 games, and after that April had a lot to live up to, because Misty and Kerri were the only team to ever stay undefeated in Olympic beach volleyball play. April won silver with Jennifer Kessy at the 2012 games and was looking to get her first ever taste of gold in Rio this year.

April and Kerri crushed Australia, Switzerland, China and Italy in the preliminaries, before taking on Brazil in the semifinals. But now it’s Agatha and Barbara’s time to shine, as they will attempt to take gold in the finals against Kira and Laura on Aug. 17.
