Shakur won his semifinal bout by default after Vladimir Nikitin of Russia was too battered and bruised from his epic battle against Irish fighter Michael Conlon, 24, in the quarterfinals to continue on in the competition. By withdrawing, he sent Shakur to the finals nice and rested up unlike Robeisy, who defeated Uzbekistan’s Murodjon Akhmadaliev, 21 in a 3-0 decision. Shakur has studied up on Robiesy’s fight videos to get prepped and said before the match, “I want that gold medal, it’s going to be a great fight, I promise.”

Win or lose, Shakur will go home with a medal, but we’re sure he’s going to be fighting his heart out for the gold, even though a silver medal would still be a really huge accomplishment for the young amateur boxer. The last time the U.S. won the Olympic gold in this event was Andre Ward‘s victory in 2004. Since’s he’s one of Shakur’s idols, it would be only fitting for him to follow in Andre’s footsteps.
