OMG, this was literally a photo finish in the women’s 400m final at the Rio Olympics, as Allyson Felix heartbreakingly lost out on the gold medal as her nearest opponent Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas literally dove hands first across the finish line. Get all the dramatic race details right here!
Allyson Felix, 30, came so incredibly close to winning the gold medal in the women’s 400m dash, coming on super strong in the final straight away to catch leader Shaunae Miller, 22, but the Bahamian must have an amazing sense of peripheral vision to know her competitor was about to pass her and cinch gold at the finish line. She literally dove arms and body first and ended up nabbing the top spot with a time of 49.44, and instant replay showed that it was in fact her arms crossing the finish line ahead of Allyson’s legs that nabbed the gold medal.
It took a good 10 seconds before the scores were announced because the finish was just that close. Allyson looked absolutely heartbroken when the times were posted and she lost out to Shaunae. With the silver medal, Allyson becomes the most decorated female track and field star with seven medals, and had she won the gold she would have become the first woman to win five track and field Olympic gold medals.
Going into it, the women’s 400m final almost seemed like anyone’s race, with Team USA’s Phyllis Francis coming in first place in the qualifiers and her teammate Allyson taking first in the semifinals. Heck, even another U.S. runner Natasha Hastings was in the third place spot in the semifinals too, so it really did come down to the speed they brought in the finals — and ultimately it was Shaunae who was the fastest!

The U.S. track team has been taking the Olympics by storm, with Emma Coburn earning America its first medal (a bronze) in the 3000m steeplechase only hours before her track & field teammates ran the 400m dash. And with six days left in this year’s Olympics, there’s still plenty of time for Team USA to dominate! We’re just sad Allyson had to settle for the silver after her amazing performance.
