She’s one tough cookie! Claressa Shields was out to defend her women’s middleweight boxing gold medal and boy did she win big! It was quite a match against Dutch fighter Nouchka Fontijn on Aug. 21, but after all the punches were thrown, Claressa came out the champion!
So unstoppable! Claressa Shields, 21, had an epic fight for her second gold medal up against tough Dutch fighter Nouchka Fontijn, 28, in the finals for the women’s middleweight class. Claressa was out to defend her gold medal that she won in London’s 2012 games, so she totally gave it her all. In the end, Clarissa put up so much power there was no question who was the victor.

Claressa has showed her dominance throughout the Olympic competition, making it easily into the semifinals when she crushed Kazakhstan’s Dariga Shakimova, 28, in a unanimous 3-0 decision. She’s been solid and consistent throughout her Olympic run and didn’t show any signs that she was ready to settle for anything less than the gold medal again. She brought home the very first women’s boxing gold for the U.S. after the sport was introduced in the London 2012 games and was hungry and primed for another triumph.

Claressa’s US boxing teammate Shakur Stevenson, 19, hopes to bring home the men’s boxing gold medal for the first time since 2004. His match starts immediately after her bout ends and he’s the favorite going into the match.
