Jack Riley, the voice of Tommy and Dil Pickle’s kooky father on Rugrats, died from pneumonia in Los Angeles early on Aug. 19, according to Entertainment Weekly. He joined the voice cast of the Nickelodeon program as Stu Pickles, in 1991 and stuck with the role through all of the movies, as well as the cartoon’s sequel series, All Grown Up. The joy that the cartoon brought to millennials alone means that Jack’s death will be mourned by so many today. But the 80-year-old’s talents were not just beloved by ’90s children.
Jack was also famous with older audiences for his work on The Bob Newhart Show, where he played Elliot Carlin, a patient of Bob Newhart’s. He reprised that role in 1985 on NBC’s hospital series St. Elsewhere. Jack also appeared in a number of comedic director Mel Brooks’ films, including History of the World: Part I, High Anxiety, and To Be or Not to Be. What a career!
