Lucky number five! The U.S. women’s 4×100 team destroyed the competition Aug. 19 with one of their fastest races ever. The victory gave Allyson Felix her fifth gold medal, the most of any American woman in track and field. Keep reading for all the exciting details of the ladies’ amazing accomplishment!
Allyson Felix, 30, ran her heart out to make Olympic history, with the U.S. women’s 4×100 relay team taking the gold medal in the event and it became her record fifth one in her storied track career. Tianna Bartoletta, 30, English Gardner, 24, Torie Bowie, 25, made up the rest of the winning team. The U.S. was the defending champ in the event after winning it in London in 2012, and they proved they were the best by absolutely crushing the competition, with a 41.02, the second fastest time ever run in the Olympics!
The ladies were absolutely unstoppable. Racing in lane one on the inside of the track, Tianna got things started with a solid run before handing off to Allyson who cruised it down the backstretch with a great pass to English. Torie brought it home with SO much speed, leaving world champion Jamaica in the dust to take home the silver medal. With this victory, Allyson now has five gold medals, the most of any other woman in American track and field history.

Allyson had a total scare on Aug. 18 when she bobbled the baton in the qualifying round while handing off to teammate English Gardner, 24. But the race had a do-over after it was proved that a Brazilian runner had veered into Allyson’s lane, causing her to trip and drop the Baton. The U.S was triumphant when the race was run again, giving Allyson hope for gold in the finals.
