As soon as the women finish their bouts, rising American boxing sensation Shakur Stevenson, 19, hits the ring for the men’s bantamweight 56kg class semifinals fight against Russia’s Vladamir Nikitin starting at 10:30am. The New Jersey native is going to have a very famous face in the stands cheering him on for his fight as retired boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, 39, is in Rio and has even been giving him fighting tips that Shakur has chosen over the advice of his own coach!
After his victorious quarterfinal match Aug. 16, he revealed to SB Nation that Floyd “kept saying ‘jab,’ and (my coaches) kept saying ‘go to the body. I heard him a lot. He has been in the same situation before, and he mastered boxing. He’s one of the greatest, so of course I gotta listen to him.”
Floyd posted on his Instagram that he’s signed Shakur to a promotional deal once the games are over. “I came all the way to Brazil to support the athletes of the United States but while enjoying the events I had one goal in mind and that was to extend a warm welcome to @ShakurStevenson into The Money Team family.@MayweatherPromotions connecting true future stars worldwide!” he wrote Aug, 17.
