How horrific! A man was killed while playing Pokemon GO late at night at San Francisco’s famous Fisherman’s Wharf. Read on for the details of the shooting that led to his tragic death.
Calvin Riley, 20, was playing Pokemon GO at Aquatic Park near the popular tourist destination around 10 p.m. on Aug. 6, when he was gunned down, according to Sgt. Robert Jansing. Investigators are still puzzled as to the reason behind the crime, which makes total sense, as the person who shot and killed Calvin didn’t even attempt to rob him. And it’s unclear if his death was related to the extremely popular game. “There doesn’t appear to be any outstanding motive right now,” Robert said. Even though there were still several people in the park at that time, there are currently no witnesses who have come forward saying they saw the gunman, and police are still collecting security footage to see if there are any clues about the assailant. This is just so unbelievably tragic and senseless.
Calvin was a resident of San Mateo, Calif., and a graduate of Junipero Serra High School. He was studying kinesiology at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, and playing on the baseball team, according to the school’s website. A GoFundMe page was set up by Calvin’s cousin Gabriel Morales to help pay for his funeral expenses.
“You had all the mechanics, talent and dedication to make your dreams a reality. I wish I got to talk to you one more time. I would’ve told you how much I loved you and missed you. How bad I look forward to seeing you again,” Gabriel wrote on the page. How heartbreaking is that?

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Calvin’s family in their time of grieving. And, though his death is not the first crime to be committed in association with Pokemon GO, we hope it will be the last. The cellphone app is meant to be a fun way for players to get out, explore and have a good time with their friends. It is so sad that people are being harmed, and even killed, while trying to enjoy themselves. Let’s all hope the game does not become too dangerous to play.
