While the USA’s “Dream Team” will be dominating the basketball court, the “Redeem Team” will be swinging on the parallel bars, rotating around the pommel horse and flying high during the vault. The absolutely ripped studs of the USA Men’s gymnastics team will take part of the team qualifiers on Aug. 6, as five of America’s best will try to take home a medal. US Gymnastics Women’s Team — PICS
The USA’s team includes Sam Mikulak, 23, Jake Dalton, 24, Chris Brooks, 29, Alex Naddour, 25, and Danell Leyva, 24. John Orozco, 23, was supposed to make the trip down to Brazil, but the young Olympian tore his ACL during training and was replaced by Danell. Akash Modi, 21, and Donnell Whittenburg, 21, are on stand-by as alternates, in case the team needs help to avoid another embarrassment.
Yes, while the USA’s women’s team are the reigning Olympic champions, per Sporting News, the men’s team left the 2012 London Olympics without a single medal. Though they were considered favorites, they wound up in fifth place. The bitter taste of defeat has stung in the mouth of Sam ever since.
“[We’re bringing] a higher level of professionalism and confidence and that’s our biggest improvements,” he told PEOPLE magazine. “We made a plan of attack and we want to execute. We are better. We are stronger.”
After the qualification round, the USA hopes to make it to the Men’s team all-around final on Aug. 8. After that, the individual competitions will begin! Will Team USA unite and kick off their domination in Brazil? Or will this be another heartbreaking repeat of what happened London?
