Hillary Clinton has made her choice! On July 22, she officially named Tim Kaine as her running mate. Together, they’ll challenge Donald Trump and Mike Pence for the White House! We have all the details on the stunning news, right here!
Donald Trump, 70, and Mike Pence, 57, better get ready, because they’re in for a fight! Hillary Clinton, 68, announced Tim Kaine as her VP pick after a passionate campaign speech in Tampa, FL on July 22. She immediately tweeted that she was “thrilled” to add Tim to her powerhouse campaign, because he’s someone “who’s devoted his life to fighting for others.” Then, she took to Instagram with a full explanation of why Tim is the perfect partner for her.
“Tim is a lifelong fighter for progressive causes and one of the most qualified vice presidential candidates in our nation’s history,” she gushed. “But his credentials alone aren’t why I asked him to run alongside me. Tim’s a man of relentless optimism who believes no problem is unsolvable if you’re willing to put in the work. That commitment to delivering results has stayed with him throughout his decades-long career as a public servant.”
“I could give you a laundry list of things he accomplished as mayor of Richmond, governor of Virginia, and in the United States Senate. But here’s what’s important: Tim has never taken a job for the glory or the title. He’s the same person whether the cameras are on or off, motivated by the belief that you can make a difference in people’s lives through public service.”
“I didn’t make this decision lightly. I’ve had the privilege of seeing two presidents and two vice presidents up close, and I wanted to pick someone who will be able to give me their best advice, look me in the eye, and tell me they disagree with me when they do. But what matters most is a simple test that’s not easy to meet: whether the person could step in at a moment’s notice and serve as president. I have no doubt that Tim can do the job, and I want him by my side on the trail and in the White House. But we’re going to need your help to get there. So join me and Tim, and let’s get to work and go win this thing. -H”
Now that’s something we can get behind! She even shared a video to helps us get to know the new candidate better:
Once Donald picked the Indiana governor as his right hand man, everyone wondered who Hillary would choose to be her second-in-command. Virginia senator Tim was an early odds-on favorite to get picked. As a man who has served as a mayor, a governor and a senator, he would definitely bring experience to the Executive office.
Tom Vilsack, 65, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, has been a long-time friend of Hillary and he soon emerged as another contender. “Talk about somebody who studies a problem, asks for advice about what will work, puts together teams, collaborates and then delivers,” she said during a 2015 rally in Iowa, per NBC News. Surprisingly, Cory Booker‘s, 47, name was being tossed around days before the announcement as a possible third choice, as the former Mayor of Newark and current New Jersey senator connects well with both the elites and the working class.
Secretary of Labor Tom Perez, 54, was also rumored to be a choice when he met Hillary at her Washington home on July 15, per The Washington Post. As a progressive with strong connections with organized labor, Tom would be a good pick to connect with those voters who wanted Bernie Sanders, 74, instead of Hillary.
Speaking about Progressive candidates for VP, after Elizabeth Warren, 67, campaigned with Hillary, voters wondered if she was auditioning for the VP role. Hillary “loved” how Elizabeth got under Donald’s skin, leading many to hope that the Democratic Party would have two female politicians on the presidential ballot come November.
