Incredible. Elaine Thompson of Jamaica has won the gold medal in the women’s 100m sprint. She faced tough competition in rivals Dafne Schippers, Tori Bowie and Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce, but Elaine was simply too fast for the field on Aug. 13 at the Rio games. Well done, girl!
American Tori Bowie, 25, worked so hard to get here but she could not beat the super fast Jamaican Elaine Thompson, 24, who won gold in the women’s 100m in Rio with a time of 10.71 seconds. Back in the 2015 World Championships Tori proved she has the ability to finish in the medal’s positions — she scored bronze in Beijing. Tori didn’t quite better her 10.78 personal best, but she didn’t let herself down, however she was no match for Elaine who will bring home the gold.

Tori started off well as Dafne and Elaine’s blistering pace made them seem like they were wearing rockets on their track shoes. If Tori is disappointed, she should look no further than her next event — the women’s 200m on Aug. 15. She’s favored over the longer-distance, and is hoping that a bronze is achievable. Again, though, she’ll be up against the might of Dafne, who is an absolute beast on the track.
Tori will also be hopeful that the USA women’s 4×100 relay team can defy the odds and win a medal. Again, it’ll be tough up against the Jamaicans but they will give it their best shot, no doubt about that.
If this is just a taste of what’s to come in track and field, we cannot wait for more. The men’s 100m final on Aug. 14 will be a real spectacle to behold, with Usain Bolt looking to add to his collection of 6 gold medals. It’s hard to imagine anyone stopping him!
