Can anyone beat Katie Ledecky? The ‘First Lady of Freestyle’ added to her collection of gold medals in Rio with a dominating victory in the 800m race that absolutely shattered the current world record. Keep reading for more on her amazing achievement.Swimming phenom Katie Ledecky, who already has three medals –two gold and one silver — at the 2016 Rio Olympics, was confident of adding to a medal haul as she stepped up for the 800m, in what is one of her favorite events to compete in. She proved why she’s America’s premiere distance swimmer by completely dominated the race from start to finish, not just earning a gold medal but setting a new World record with the time of 8:04:79.
Katie burst out to an early lead and then settled in to her usual speedy pace. She’s never lost in the 800m in any competition and she wasn’t going to let the gold get away. She was on world record pace throughout most of the race and by the halfway point her lead was so ridiculous most of her competition was a half a pool’s length behind her!

Just to give you some indication of how good Katie is at the 800m, back at the trials in July she won this race by a massive 10 seconds from her nearest competitors. And of course, back in London 2012, she won gold in the same event at the tender age of 15. Simply amazing.
The 19-year-old has already been a star in the pool for the USA, winning gold medals in both the 200m and 400m freestyle races. The only blip came in the women’s 4×100 freestyle relay when she had to settle for silver, but finishing second-place really isn’t on this girl’s agenda AT ALL!
The way Katie has conducted herself in this Olympics so far, it’s hard to imagine anyone being able to get near to her in this event in years to come. She’s head and shoulders above the field.
