It was literally Katie Ledecky to the rescue for the U.S. Women’s 4×200 freestyle team Aug 10. She had to take her team from behind in the anchor position and not only brought them into first place, she dominated the other teams so much she won by a full body length! Katie Ledecky, 19, won her third gold medal in swimming at the 2016 Rio Olympics, anchoring the U.S. Women’s team in the 4×200 relay race,. She celebrated with her teammates Allison Schmitt, 26, Leah Smith, 21, Maya Dirado, 23, after a nail-biting race that saw the U.S. lagging behind other countries until Katie obliterated the competition with her breathtaking swim.
Allison started things off but had a tough fight as the Swedish team led throughout most of the first 200 meters before she handed things off to Leah,who needed to make up some much-needed ground. But swimmers from China and Australia pulled ahead of her by the time finally Maya hit the water. The third swimmer is the key to making up for any lost ground and Maya swam her heart out, keeping a good pace against the Australian leaders. So that left it up to Katie to save the day for the U.S. team, who never led at any point before she dove into the water. She finally pulled the team into the lead after her first 100 meters, clearly wanting her third gold in Rio.

Katie absolutely crushed it, powering so fast through the water that by the time she touched the wall and brought victory to her team she was an entire body length ahead of the second place Australians, who had to settle for the silver. She single-handedly gave the U.S. the win with that killer performance!

Katie is going to be leaving Rio with a whole lot of hardware, as after her relay she now has three gold medals, including ones for wins in the individual 200m and 400m freestyle events. She settled for silver in the women’s 4×100 freestyle relay but wasn’t going to let another chance at gold slip away with her dominating performance in the 4×200. She now has just one more race to go, with her 800m freestyle race where she’s heavily favored to win!
