Awkward. Khloe Kardashian thought she was just showing her love for her fave football team, the Oakland Raiders, when she posted a photo of her in team gear on Aug. 9. Unfortunately, some people weren’t happy she was sporting bantu knots. Get the full scoop on the controversy here.
People either seemed to love or loathe the photo of Khloe Kardashian, 32, wearing a black Oakland Raiders t-shirt, knee-high black boots and a black “Koko” choker — and those bantu knots. She captioned the photo, “I like this one better,” in reference to other pics of her dolled up in all her Raiders glory, which were posted by her makeup artist Joyce Bonelli and hairstylist Justine Marjan. Once the pic was up, the Oakland Raiders saw it and tweeted it out, captioning it “Good choice. #RaiderNation.” That’s when people piped in on how the famous fan had styled her hair.

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star — who has been sharing her experiments with several hairstyles recently on Instagram, including buns inspired by Hailey Baldwin and harajuku buns — was attacked by several commenters on both Twitter and Instagram for the look, which they deemed cultural misappropriation. “Why can’t the Kardashians be creative and innovate their own hairstyles? Oh… Wait. No talent. Do some Armenian hairstyles to your head,” one Instagram commenter wrote. Ouch!
We don’t think Khloe meant any harm with her hairdo, but cultural misappropriation is a serious topic, as many cultural practices are appropriated and taken for granted these days. Khloe seemed to just want to show offer her clothes, bod and team spirit in a fun way, with a fun do. But it looks like Koko just might need to be a little more careful from now on.
