While ‘Making A Murderer’ fans rejoiced at the news that Brendan Dassey’s conviction has been overturned, Steven Avery’s former fiancee Jodi Stachowski is hoping the news doesn’t result in the same thing happening to him. Keep reading for why she firmly wants her ex to stay behind bars forever.
Jodi Stachowski, Steven Avery‘s ex, tells TMZ that she fears, “Brendan’s impending freedom could put pressure on the courts to release Steven, who she firmly believes is guilty of raping and killing Teresa.” She also told the site that “she fears Steven,” and would be terrified if he was released from prison. But she is sympathetic to Brendan because she says the state of Wisconsin, “destroyed his life.”
She was seen in Making a Murderer staunchly defending Steven’s innocence, but once the 10 part series aired on Netflix in Dec. 2015, she totally changed her tune. She told one of Nancy Grace‘s producers in Jan. that she knew he was capable of murder, “Because he threatened to kill me and my family and a friend of mine.” She said that she waited all these years to come forward because she wanted to spill “the truth” and that claimed “he’s not innocent,” in Teresa’s killing.
A federal judge has finally overturned Steven’s 26-year-old nephew Brendan Dassey‘s life sentence stemming from his 2007 conviction for first-degree intentional homicide, second-degree sexual assault, and mutilation of a corpse in the killing of Teresa Halbach. Judge William Duffin found Aug. 12 that the then-16-year-old’s confession was coerced and involuntary, and he could go free in 90 days if the state of Wisconsin doesn’t refile the case against him.

Steven has maintained his innocence in Teresa’s disappearance and murder, claiming he was set up by the Manitowoc County, WI authorities. He had been sent away for 18 years in prison for a sexual assault he says he never committed and DNA finally proved him right. After his wrongful imprisonment, he went on to sue Manitowoc County, the former district attorney and the county sheriff for $36 million in damages and he believes that police set him up for Teresa’s murder. Brendan’s coerced confession that he took part in Teresa’s rape and murder with his Uncle Steven is now out the window with the new ruling, so Steven could use the fact that his case now lacks any corroboration in his appeal.
