Can you believe it? The Men’s 200m Individual Medley in swimming didn’t disappoint. Two old foes, Ryan Lochte, 32, and Michael Phelps, 31, raced against each other for the last time in professional competition on Aug. 11, but once again, Michael left Ryan in the dust! Here’s the scoop.
Both Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte got off to an exceptional start as they dived into the pool with fellow challenger Philip Heintz. It was clear from the off-start this was going to be a tight race! Ryan actually finished the first lap in front, but by the time they made it back to the end of the pool Michael had pulled ahead, and stayed there for the rest of the race as Ryan slipped out of the winner’s circle. Poo guy!
Michael looked thrilled after the race, holding up four fingers to represent his fourth gold in a row in this competition. Ryan wasn’t so pleased. “You know, it’s been a long journey. I just wish I did a little better. I felt great before the race and I guess I just didn’t have it tonight. I gave it my all and that’s all I could ask for,” he told an interviewer after the race. “It’s hard finding different ways to make it fun again. I know after this I’m going to need some time off just a break mentally and physically.”

In the heats, Ryan showed why he was the swimmer to beat in this event by completing the fastest time of 1:57.38. He just beat out Philip of Germany, who recorded an impressive 1:57.59. Focused Michael, who has just the best game face, recorded the third best time of 1:58.41. But it’s not always about what you do in qualifying.
Ryan has already recorded a gold medal in the 4×200 freestyle, when he anchored the USA team to victory on Aug. 9. Michael was also in the team to scoop gold, and he already has three gold medals in this year’s Games. Don’t forget, he won the men’s 200m butterfly and 4×100 freestyle relay. If he is going out, he’s going out in a bang and at the top!
While we’re with team USA all the way, it’s always fascinating to see two of our best athletes so competitive with each other. The best man won, so there can’t be any complaints.
