With Team USA cruising to the team finals, the drama was found during the women’s individual all-around competition. Gabby, who won the gold medal during the 2012 London Olympics, was shut out despite finishing in third place. Because of the rule that only two athletes from a single country can compete in the final, Gabby watched as Simone and Aly advanced without her. That means 22 other gymnasts with scores lower than Gabby could possibly win the gold.
With this being Gabby’s only shot at scoring a medal at Rio 2016, the stakes are high. They’re even higher for Simone. She is on track to become the first female gymnast to win five gold Olympic medals, per NBC Sports.
After she blew away the rest of the competition, scoring 62.366 while no non-American even cracked 59 points, it’s a safe bet that she’s going to lead her squad to Olympic glory.
Who do you think will win the gold medal, HollywoodLifers? Are you USA, all the way? Or do you think China will claim the championship?
