What an incredible race! Rio 2016 crowned a winner in the men’s 4×200-meter relay on Aug. 9, and after all the splashing the U.S. Men’s team easily swam away with the Olympic victory! Keep reading for the details of their crushing win and Michael Phelps’ record 21st gold medal.
Swim fans in the US got quite a treat Aug. 9 as they watched Michael Phelps, 31, Ryan Lochte, 32, Conor Dwyer, 27, and Townley Haas, 19, race in the 4x200m relay. Conor got things off to a strong start for the U.S. overcoming Australia as he handed things off to Townley. The first-time Olympian widened the lead before handing it off to veteran Ryan, with one top five splits in history. Ryan completely dominated his leg before handing it off to the Greatest Of All Time Michael, who anchored the race. He had such a lead going in that before the race even ended the commentators declared the U.S. Men’s had the gold medal before they finally won with a time of 7:00.66.
With that race, Michael secured his 21st Olympic gold medal, and his second of the night after winning the 200m butterfly final which he totally and he crushed, clearly thrilled by his big victory after failing to get the gold in the event in the 2012 London Olympics. He raced in the butterfly so close to when he was to be part of the men’s relay that some thought he’d be too tired to participate, but that clearly wasn’t the case.

The United States went into this event as the defending 4x200m champions, having won the gold medal at the 2012 games in London. Matt Grevers, 31, Brendan Hansen, 34, Nathan Adrian, 27, and the most decorated athlete in Olympics history Michael defeated Japan and Australia to take the top prize. This time around, Great Britain and Japan finished second and third.

The other major swim action of the night belonged to Katie Ledecky. The 19-year-old superstar was battling her rival, Sarah Sjostrom, 22, of Sweden in the 200m freestyle. These two went into their match with gold around their necks and records broken. Katie posted the best time in the world at the 400m freestyle, winning the top prize. Meanwhile, Sarah broke her own world record in the 100m butterfly. When they got into the pool for the 200m freestyle, it was Katie came up on top.
