The U.S. men’s volleyball team seems to be peaking at just the right time, as they march further towards their quest for Olympic gold, and it couldn’t come against a more poignant opponent than Italy. The Italians knocked Team USA out of the quarterfinals in London’s 2012 games in a crushing 3-0 defeat, so a victory for the Americans in the semifinals would be sweet, sweet revenge! Only four players from the London 2012 team are back for their play in Rio, so the infusion of youth has helped shake things up a bit. At first Team USA stumbled in their initial group, but they’ve totally turned things around. The team held off Poland in three straight sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-20) in the quarterfinals Aug. 17. It’s their fourth straight win after dropping their first two games in group play. Unfortunately one of those losses was to Italy, so hopefully the team’s new momentum will be able to power them past the team this time around.

Should the U.S. team make it past Italy, they’ll face the winner of the other semifinals match between Brazil and Russia which goes down later in the day at 9:15pm EST. GO USA! It would be so great to have them playing for the gold medal, which will take place on the final day of the games on Aug. 21.
