Awww! Members of the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team decided to literally taste their Rio Olympics victory by chewing on their gold medals! You’ve got to see the adorable pic of Aly Raisman and her teammates chomping of their brand new hardware.
So adorable! As soon as American gymnasts Aly Raisman, 22, and Madison Kocian, 19, received their gold medals for their amazing team all-around victory Aug 9, they did the now iconic shot of biting down on their new medals, something that’s become a tradition among Olympic athletes in all sports over recent years. No, the girls weren’t hungry or trying to bite down and make sure the hardware was real. It’s just become a shot that photographers love and they were smart enough to play for the cameras. Since Aly tasted victory at the London 2012 games, she was well aware of this fact being the first to chew on her medal, as newcomer Madison looked on and followed her lead and was soon joined by teammate Laurie Hernandez, 16, for the victorious pose.
“It’s become an obsession with the photographers,” David Wallechinsky, co-author of “The Complete Book of the Olympics” told CNN. “I think they look at it as an iconic shot, as something that you can probably sell. I don’t think it’s something the athletes would probably do on their own.” After all, there’s not a whole lot the athlete can do with the medal other than hold it up, stare at it or something else mundane.

The Fab Five — now called The Final Five — absolutely crushed the competition in the team all-around, winning by the biggest margin of victory at any major gymnastics event. They topped the silver medalist Russian team by a whopping eight points. In the last four Olympics, no team has won by a percentage more than 1.5 points, showing how they are quite possibly the best women’s gymnastics team the Olympics has ever seen!
