The United States men will take on the Australian team in the Olympic preliminary rounds of group A action. The format for the road to gold for these basketball teams is simple. There are 12 teams total entering the tournament divided into 2 groups, Group A and Group B. After 3 games within each group, the top four teams based on points and records move on to sudden death, traditional bracket tournament action. Easy.
The 2016 version of the dream team is stocked with talent and pretty much a lock for bringing home gold. The team is rolling through prelims having routed China by 57 points and Venezuela by 44. It has been 24 years since the United States put together the first dream team which included basketball legends like Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, Larry Bird, and Scottie Pippen to name a few. Notably absent from the current dream team are the two best players in the NBA today, MVP’s, Stephen Curry and LeBron James. These two giants of the hardwood battled it out in a long 7 game series and are opting to rest their legs for the upcoming NBA season. LeBron came out on top of that series over Steph’s Golden State Warriors as the Cleveland Cavaliers won the 2016 NBA championship.
